Hola!
My name is Aaron Woods. I am an African American 22 years old and currently living in Veracruz, Mexico. I’ve spent my entire life in the United States while traveling to multiple states during my time of growing up. I was born in Southaven, MS while moving to many places throughout the states such as: Memphis, TN, Jackson, MS, Las Vegas, NV, and Berkeley, CA. Though I am currently living in Mexico, this isn't my first time coming here. I recently visited Cabo for my 21st birthday. I went to a beautiful resort which gave me a bit of experience with the country. A year later, after moving from Richmond, VA back to California, there were plans to be made to move to Veracruz.
I don’t give much reaction when ideas are put in front of me, but in reality I had no idea what to think about moving to Mexico because it is extremely different than a little vacation. After landing in Veracruz, my first stop was to a hotel to set my bags down and begin my new life in Mexico. The hotel was Galeria Plaza which looked really beautiful but when we got there we were stopped momentarily due to our room not being ready for what felt like almost 2 hours. Thankfully, we were compensated by having our room upgraded and it was really worth the wait I must say. Afterward, we headed out to a local Walmart which gained my interest because I’ve never seen anything where you had to pay to park to go inside the store. This is normally free inside the states. While inside the store I got to see different items inside the store that aren’t normally in the US as well as a Mcdonald's offering different meals that were not usually available in the states. I’ve also come across different races of people where in America you’d assume they know English but here it's only Spanish which really shocked me. Like there was a whole chinese spot with actual chinese people speaking Spanish. After the grocery shopping we headed back to stock up for the tour that began the day afterwards by a guide named Memo.
Memo showed us the streets of Veracruz and the history that went with it ranging from The story of The Mulata, to the Oldest black neighborhood La Huaca and San Juan de Ulua. I found all of them really interesting as we were walking through the city. We also visited a museum called Centro Cultural Atarazanas. After 2-3 hours of roaming the city we called it a day and thanked Memo for the tour.
The day after, we went looking for apartments that an agent had setup for us. While we weren’t really fond of the 1st location, the 2nd one was really pretty, along with being near the water as well as being near the city so it just came off as perfect. Same day we went to the Malecon to visit the sign of Veracruz as a celebration of our new life. My mother and I were approached by a crowd of people wanting to take pictures of us and calling our hair beautiful. It was really uncommon for me because I’ve never had this sort of attention in the states so it was a bit nerve racking. Currently, we have plans on going to Yanga soon as well as visiting the clock downtown that plays “La Bamba” sometime this week. I feel like this will be a huge change of events for me starting my new life down here while I continue to learn and grow as a person. I’m also a fan of history so I’m sure it will be exciting as well!
